The start of a new year is the perfect time to reflect on your health and make positive changes. If you’ve been thinking about quitting smoking, remember—it’s never too late to start your journey toward a healthier life. For more than 40 years, Canadians have observed National Non-Smoking Week, a campaign dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and encouraging people to quit. This year, the week runs from January 18 to 24, making it an ideal time to take steps toward quitting smoking or vaping. Tobacco use remains the leading preventable cause of death in Canada, claiming about 16,000 lives in Ontario every year. The week also highlights the risks linked to e-cigarettes and recreational cannabis. One key event during the week is Weedless Wednesday, on January 21, which challenges smokers of tobacco and cannabis to go smoke-free for 24 hours. Quitting smoking or vaping isn’t easy—but every small step counts. Talk to your health care provider about strategies and supports that can help you succeed. The Health Department offers resources to guide and support individuals who want to quit. For more information, visit durham.ca/TobaccoAndVaping and durham.ca/Cannabis. |
