Reconciliation through remembrance: Honouring brave heroes on Indigenous Veterans Day
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“Today (November 8) on Indigenous Veterans Day, we honour the courage, strength and sacrifices of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Veterans who have served in times of war, conflict and peace.
For generations, Indigenous Peoples have answered the call to defend this land—from the First and Second World Wars to Korea, Afghanistan and peacekeeping missions around the world—often serving in critical roles that demanded bravery and precision.
Yet, their sacrifices were too often met with silence. Many returned home to face discrimination, exclusion from benefits, and the loss of their rights and lands.
Today, we remember the battles fought abroad, but also the injustices faced at home. We honour the legacy of Indigenous Veterans and reaffirm our commitment to reconciliation by creating spaces of respect, remembrance and healing.
Flags at all Regional facilities will be lowered to half-mast today and remain lowered until November 11.”
