Regional Chair John Henry urges drivers to slow down and move over to protect first responders
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“Last night (November 16), while responding to a collision on Wagg Road and Highway 47, three firefighters of the Uxbridge Fire Department sustained serious injuries when they were struck by an approaching vehicle. Our thoughts are with the injured firefighters, and we wish for a full and speedy recovery to everyone involved.
This incident reminds us of the risks emergency responders face every time they answer the call. Our first responders need space to do their jobs safely. I urge all residents to slow down and move over when you see emergency vehicles stopped with lights flashing. This isn’t just the law—it’s about saving lives. Please do your part to protect those who protect us.
Thank you to the Durham Regional Police Service, Uxbridge Fire Department, Region of Durham Paramedic Services, Ornge, and all first responders involved for their courage and dedication to keeping our communities safe—even under extremely hazardous conditions.”
