Walking together: Honouring the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Whitby, Ontario – On September 26, 2025, the Region of Durham is hosting a walk in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Date and time: September 26, 2025, from 10 a.m. to noon
Event details: The event will begin with participants meeting in the Lower Galleria of Regional Headquarters (605 Rossland Road East, Whitby, south entrance off Garden Street) at 10 a.m. to hear speakers, watch Indigenous drumming and participate in a smudge.
The walk then departs from the Pathway to Reconciliation Crosswalk, also near the south entrance of headquarters, continuing along Rossland Road to Fallingbrook Park at the intersection of Rossland and Anderson. We will stop at the park for a reflection activity before returning to Durham Region Headquarters where refreshments will be served.
Who: This free event is open to the public and is being planned by the Region of Durham’s Indigenous Advocacy Subcommittee of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Working Group.
Why: The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation honours the children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools, their families and communities who continue to be impacted by these tragedies. This is a time to reflect on our role in supporting Indigenous healing, while committing to meaningful actions in truth and reconciliation, and honouring the heritage, cultures, and achievements of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.
How to participate: Register to participate. If possible, wear an orange shirt and remember to bring your water bottle.
