Construction of the new Durham-Scarborough Bus Rapid Transit (DSBRT) line is progressing along Highway 2 in Ajax. This project is more than a transit upgrade—it is a transformation of how we move and connect.

By building 36 kilometres of dedicated bus lanes and introducing traffic signal priority, DSBRT will deliver faster, more reliable transit service with buses every five minutes, 49 new stops, and an 85 percent reduction in delays. The project will also deliver significant economic and environmental benefits by boosting local businesses, driving workforce growth, supporting housing development, and promoting a cleaner, more sustainable future across the region.

That is just the beginning. By coordinating DSBRT construction with other infrastructure upgrades, the Region is modernizing critical systems that serve residents and businesses every day—improving roads, utilities and community spaces while minimizing long-term disruption.

What else is being improved along the DSBRT route?

  • Construction of dedicated bus rapid transit lanes for fast, efficient and reliable transit—along with four new median bus stop platforms at Kingston Road intersections (Harwood Avenue and Salem Road)—to support increased ridership along the corridor.
  • Modifications to the existing traffic signals and crosswalks, including accessibility improvements, dedicated transit signals and bicycle track signals.
  • Upgrades to the sewer systems to ensure cleaner water, healthier living, and support sustainable development.
  • New watermains to improve water pressure and reduce the risk of breaks.
  • Rebuilt roads and intersections for smoother driving and safer travel.
  • Enhanced streetscaping, including landscaping for tree and shrub plantings, median and boulevard decorative planting beds, patterned concrete and interlocked boulevards.
  • Dedicated in-boulevard cycle tracks with crossrides, sidewalks with accessibility improvements and street lighting.

These improvements will serve our communities for decades, reducing future maintenance needs and creating safer, more welcoming streets.

Why now?

Coordinating these upgrades with DSBRT construction helps:

  • Minimize long-term disruption.
  • Extend the lifespan of local infrastructure.
  • Improve safety and accessibility.
  • Improve transit frequency, reliability and connection.
  • Support business and economic growth.

What does this mean for you?

What do these improvements mean for the people who live, work and travel in our region?

  • Transit riders will enjoy shorter travel times, fewer delays and a more comfortable ride.
  • All residents will benefit from safer, more accessible streets and faster, more reliable bus service.
  • Businesses will enjoy improved customer access, dependable utilities and stronger regional connections.
  • Drivers will experience smoother, more predictable travel.
  • Everyone will have better choices for walking, cycling, and transit.

Next steps

This spring, we’re breaking ground on another DSBRT construction project along Kingston Road in The Town of Ajax from Rotherglen Road South to 300 metres west of Harwood Avenue. This project will include four additional new median bus stop platforms. Two at Kingston Road and Westney Road intersection and two at Kingston Road and Ritchie Avenue/Chapman Drive. And we’re not stopping there. Later this year the DSBRT construction project will expand into The City of Pickering.

Every infrastructure upgrade brings us closer to a community that moves better together. Thank you for your patience as we continue to dig in—literally—and create the infrastructure that supports thriving neighbourhoods and dependable rapid transit in the Region of Durham for years ahead.
