Building on successes from AMO 2020 with DRT funding announcement
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“Last month, Durham Region participated in the first ever virtual Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) Conference, from August 17 to 19.
It was an important opportunity to connect with other municipal and provincial leaders on Durham Region’s top priorities such as COVID-19 recovery, supportive housing, the GO Lakeshore East extension and investment attraction.
One of our top identified priorities is the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, in which Durham Region applied for provincial and federal investment in order to modernize our Durham Region Transit (DRT) operations. This modernization includes several projects such as the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System that will connect Oshawa to Scarborough (Urban Growth Centres) along Highway 2.
I am pleased to acknowledge the significant $83 million joint investment announced by the federal and provincial governments earlier today, in partnership with our own municipal investment of $43.2 million towards these significant DRT improvements.
From this funding, 11 major projects, including the BRT, are being undertaken. These projects will all have a tremendous benefit to DRT and to the residents of Durham.
Partnerships and funding such as this have always been integral to Durham Region—and conferences like AMO allow us to continue to advocate for Durham’s top priorities and ensure more funding in the future.”
