Local Municipalities
There are two levels of government in Durham Region:
- The Regional Municipality of Durham
- The eight local area municipalities
Some services fall under the jurisdiction of The Regional Municipality of Durham and some are the responsibility of the local area municipalities.

- Regional road maintenance
- Sewage
- Waste management (except Oshawa and Whitby)

The individual local area municipalities also provide many services, including:
- Animal services
- By-law enforcement
- Fire protection and prevention
- Libraries
- Municipal elections
- Parks and trails
- Property tax collection
- Sports and recreation
