Grow a greener Durham Region with LEAF
Together, with the LEAF (Local Enhancement & Appreciation of Forests) planting programs, we are improving our communities, one tree at a time.
Making neighbourhoods healthier
Since 2020, Durham’s partnership with LEAF has supported healthier, greener local communities by making tree planting more accessible for residents and property owners. By offering tree planting support and practical advice, LEAF helps neighbours come together to take simple actions that strengthen their streets, support each other and care for the environment.
“This work helps make neighbourhoods greener, cooler, and a more comfortable place to live,” said Shannon Logan, Durham Region’s Manager of Climate Resilience. “Trees help lower temperatures on hot days, improve the air we breathe, and manage rainwater. By planting more trees, residents can see and feel these benefits right outside their homes.”
LEAF planting programs
Durham residents can make their yards greener and more welcoming through LEAF’s various planting programs. As a non-profit organization, LEAF offers native trees and shrubs at discounted prices to help homeowners affordably create shade, privacy and space for local wildlife. Getting started is simple: book a consultation with a LEAF arborist to explore more than 50 native species, choose the best spots for planting and decide between full‑service planting or do-it-yourself options, depending on what works best.
LEAF also offers programs for multi‑unit residential and business properties. These subsidized services include virtual or on‑site consultations, native trees and shrubs, planting or delivery options, mulch, and easy‑to‑follow care instructions to help trees thrive long after planting

Durham Social Housing Planting and Stewardship Initiative
LEAF has launched a new tree‑planting program with local housing partners to add more trees and shrubs to social housing communities in Oshawa and Whitby. By working closely with residents and housing staff, the project helps create greener, more inviting outdoor spaces that reflect what each community cares about.
Ginger Teoh, Director of Tenant and Housing Services at the Durham Region Non‑Profit Housing Corporation, shared how the project with LEAF is helping create healthier and more welcoming communities for tenants.
“As this project begins, we look forward not only to the environmental benefits of tree planting, such as improved air quality, added shade and enhanced outdoor spaces, but also to the opportunities it will create for tenant participation and engagement,” said Teoh. She also highlighted the importance of getting residents involved, noting that initiatives like this encourage participation, strengthen community connections and help build pride and overall well‑being among tenants.
Logan adds, “Programs like the Durham Social Housing Planting and Stewardship Initiative, along with other LEAF initiatives, help support the Region’s Strategic Plan by focusing on sustainability, climate action and building strong, healthy communities.”

Janet McKay, LEAF's Executive Director shares how proud she is of our long-standing partnership. “Planting native trees is one of the most effective ways to improve our urban environment, with benefits ranging from cooling our neighbourhoods to enhancing local biodiversity and supporting healthier communities. We look forward to continuing this important work together in the years ahead.”
