International Women’s Day 2026: Coming together to “balance the scales”
On March 3, the Region of Durham, along with local municipal and community partners, welcomed residents from across the region to its annual International Women’s Day celebration. This year’s theme, “balance the scales,” focused on the essential role that health and well‑being play in supporting women and girls.
The event began with a vibrant vendor market featuring women-owned businesses and artisans, as well as organizations dedicated to supporting the wellness and empowerment of women. Guests enjoyed refreshments, while connecting with one another and exploring a wide range of products and community resources.
The formal program began with a breathwork grounding exercise led by Chelsea Powell, owner of The Deliberate One. This gave everyone in the room an opportunity to pause and relax.

After the tensions of the day had been released, the live performances began. Award-winning spoken word artist Britta Badour, better known as Britta B., shared several of her poems, including Dear Young Woman, which talks about the importance of community and mentorship in the lives of girls.
Next, the Eastside Harmony Chorus shared their a capella gifts, performing songs including True Colours by Cyndi Lauper, which had the crowd singing along.

Finally, there was an insightful panel discussion on women’s mental, holistic, and overall wellness. Experts and community leaders shared perspectives on finding balance in daily life, navigating the unique pressures faced by women, the power of confidence and advocating for equitable employment, health and well‑being supports.
