New pedestrian crossover at Cameron Street West and Ann Street in Cannington
Whitby, Ontario – In support of Durham Vision Zero, a strategic road safety action plan, the Region of Durham has added a pedestrian crossover at the intersection of Cameron Street West (Regional Road 12) and Ann Street in the Township of Brock’s community of Cannington.
When: The pedestrian crossover signs and markings were installed on October 22. Flashing beacons are scheduled to be installed in 2026, which will also enhance visibility and safety for all road users.
Where: The intersection of Cameron Street and Ann Street in Cannington.
Why: Pedestrian crossovers are meant to help pedestrians safely cross the road without stop signs or traffic signals. Drivers and cyclists should look for the “stop for pedestrians” signage and must come to a full stop if pedestrians are waiting to cross or lights are flashing. Drivers and cyclists must remain stopped until pedestrians have completely cleared the crossover; drivers who do not stop for pedestrians can be fined up to $1,000 and four demerit points.
