Educators and students in a classroom.

Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) play a vital role in shaping the lives of young children and supporting families during some of the most important years of their child’s development. Through child-centred, play-based learning, ECEs help children build the social, emotional and cognitive skills they need to grow and thrive. ECEs foster strong relationships with children, families and communities, and create safe, inclusive and engaging learning environments where every child feels valued.

“As the early learning and child care system continues to expand, there has never been a better time to consider a career as a Registered ECE” said Julie Gaskin, Director of Child Care and Early Years at the Region of Durham. “The growing sector requires a skilled and compassionate workforce to meet increasing demand, opening the door to meaningful, long-term career opportunities.”

For those interested in earning an ECE diploma and becoming a registered professional, financial supports are available to help make education and training more accessible.

To highlight career pathways in this field and connect job seekers with opportunities, the Region of Durham is hosting the Early Learning and Child Care Showcase and Job Fair on April 11, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event offers attendees the chance to explore local employment opportunities, learn about post-secondary programs and meet directly with child care organizations from across the region.

The showcase will also feature engaging speakers designed to inspire and inform those considering a career in early learning. A Student and Professional panel discussion will take place at 10:30 a.m., providing first-hand perspectives on education, career pathways and day-to-day work in the sector.

At 11 a.m., attendees can hear from keynote speaker Jill Javelosa, a Registered Early Childhood Educator, pedagogical leader and reflective practitioner with more than 20 years of experience in family support, early learning and community engagement. Javelosa is an accomplished author, speaker and consultant, known for her work in curriculum development, capacity building and innovative program design that centres children, families and educators.

“The Early Learning and Child Care Showcase and Job Fair is an opportunity for students, career changers and job seekers to explore a rewarding profession that makes a lasting impact,” said Gaskin. “As the early years sector continues to grow, events like this help build the connections and awareness needed to support the next generation of educators.”
