Discover Durham Region on two wheels during Bike Month
Throughout June, the Region of Durham is inviting neighbours, families and friends to celebrate Bike Month by getting out on two wheels and exploring everything that our community has to offer. It’s a great time to rediscover local routes, enjoy the fresh air and connect with others who love to ride.
Bike Month is packed with fun and engaging activities, from the Bicycle Friendly Business Challenge to the Smart Commute trip logging contest and informative weekly webinars. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just getting started, there’s something for everyone to enjoy, learn from and be a part of.
A region designed for riding
Durham Region offers a mix of landscapes that make every ride feel different. From the shores of Lake Ontario to quiet rural roads, it’s easy to find a route that fits your pace.
The Waterfront Trail connects Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa and Clarington, with scenic lake views, parks and plenty of places to pause along the way. For those looking to switch things up, the Durham Regional Forest offers mountain biking trails with more challenging terrain, while rail trails and country roads provide slower, scenic rides through farmland and welcoming small communities. One of the best things about cycling in Durham is the variety. As Ajax resident and avid cyclist, John, puts it, “I can go from a paved waterfront trail one day to country roads or complex trails the next.”

Scenic routes and cycling experiences
Durham’s recreational cycling loops make it easy to find a route for any skill level, whether you’re planning a short family outing, a mid-distance ride along the lake, or a longer countryside trip with rolling hills and scenic views. These routes not only showcase the region’s natural beauty, but also connect cyclists to local cafés, shops and attractions that welcome riders with cycle-friendly amenities.
“Having access to bike-friendly amenities like secure parking and connected paths makes a big difference. It really supports people who want to ride for fun, to work or run errands by bike,” says John.
Multi-use paths, paved shoulders, bike lanes and other cycling facilities extend the experience even further, connecting through forests, wetlands, urban centres and small towns, and offering opportunities to explore Durham year-round.
Ride, learn and get involved
Bike Month encourages residents to ride more often, log their trips and take part in activities for a chance to win prizes. It’s part of a broader effort to promote active transportation, improve well-being and reduce environmental impact. Learn more about Bike Month and join the cycling celebrations!
Whether it’s a short ride close to home or a fully-day adventure, there’s no better time to discover why Durham Region is a great place to cycle.
