Construction scheduled to begin on Durham-Scarborough Bus Rapid Transit in Pickering
Whitby, Ontario – Construction on the Durham-Scarborough Bus Rapid Transit (DSBRT) project continues as the Regional Municipality of Durham prepares for work to begin in the City of Pickering along Kingston Road (Regional Highway 2) from approximately 200 metres west of Steeple Hill to Merritton Road.
This transformative transit initiative will bring faster, more frequent, and more reliable service to communities across Durham Region and into Toronto. With work already underway in Ajax, residents and businesses in the City of Pickering can expect to see work begin soon, marking another project milestone in delivering one of the largest transit infrastructure investments in Durham’s history.
The DSBRT will provide two-way transit service every five minutes, dedicated median bus only lanes, priority signals, and anticipated time savings of 20 minutes for transit trips along the Highway 2 corridor. To support active transportation and improve access for all road users, the DSBRT project also includes new in-boulevard cycle tracks for bike users and wider, accessible sidewalks.
When: Construction is expected to begin late summer 2026 and be completed by summer 2028. Additional notice will be issued before construction to confirm the start date.
Where: Kingston Road (Regional Highway 2) from approximately 200 metres west of Steeple Hill to Merritton Road in the City of Pickering.
Why: Highway 2 is the designated route for the DSBRT. The project spans approximately 36 kilometres through the City of Oshawa, the Town of Whitby, the Town of Ajax, the City of Pickering and the City of Toronto. For more information, visit durham.ca/BRTSteepleHillToMerritton.

This project is partially funded by a joint investment by the Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario and Durham Region through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP).

Bus routes, bus stops, sidewalks and businesses will remain open for the duration of construction.
