Early Childhood Educators celebrated for shaping children's futures

Child Care Worker and Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day on October 21 recognizes the commitment, skill and dedication of the professionals who support Durham Region’s youngest residents. As communities continue to invest in high-quality early learning and child care, the need for passionate and qualified educators remains strong.

For many Registered Early Childhood Educators (RECEs), the profession offers an opportunity to make a lasting impact on families while building a rewarding career.

“If you want to make a positive impact on a child’s life, help shape their future and contribute to society, this is a very rewarding career,” says Rayanne, an RECE in Durham Region. “I believe it is a great career path for anyone who enjoys working with children and making a difference.”

No two days are the same

Olivia, who has worked as an RECE for the past five years, enjoys the variety of this profession.

“No two days are the same when working with children,” explains Olivia, who loves being greeted by the children with big smiles and hellos. “You are always adapting to the kids and the environment. It’s hard to predict what the day will bring you, therefore, you will never get bored as every day is a surprise!”

The perfect fit

For Kat, becoming an RECE was a second career inspired by a friend, as well as a desire for more work-life balance.

“Whenever she spoke about children and childhood, it was like magic to me,” shares Kat. “She absolutely glowed when she spoke about it. I wanted to be whatever she was, and it just happened to be the perfect fit for what I needed, too.”

Today, Kat leads drop-in programs for children to attend with their caregivers and finds purpose in helping children build important life skills.

“I can’t think of anything more meaningful than helping build a strong, resilient, positive foundation for children,” says Kat.

All in the family

Family influence played an important role in Gurloveleen's career journey. Inspired by his mother, Gurloveleen chose to follow a similar path.

“My mother has worked in an early learning setting for many years. Seeing the positive impact she had on children's lives inspired me to pursue a career where I could make a meaningful difference every day,” says Gurloveleen.

As his career progressed, Gurloveleen developed an interest in inclusive education and supporting children with diverse abilities, eventually becoming an Early Learning Inclusion Resource Consultant.

“If you enjoy working with children, supporting families and creating inclusive communities, becoming an RECE provides a strong foundation for a meaningful and fulfilling career while offering opportunities for professional growth and lifelong learning,” shares Gurloveleen. “There are many career pathways beyond the classroom, including leadership, resource consulting, program management, college teaching and research.”

Candace agrees that this profession can open doors to leadership opportunities. Candace began her career in 2010 as an RECE and is now a director at a local child care centre.

“What I love most has evolved over the years. Early in my career, my passion was connecting with children, learning alongside them and discovering the world through play every day,” explains Candace. “Now as a centre director, my passion has expanded to supporting both families and educators. I love building strong relationships with families and ensuring our educators have the tools, resources and encouragement they need to create engaging, high-quality learning environments.”

Candace says the profession continues to evolve alongside growing research and understanding of child development.

“Every day is different and there’s always something new to learn!” she adds.

For Olabimpe, a career in early learning offered the chance to nurture curiosity, build confidence and create meaningful learning experiences for children. Now an assistant supervisor at a child care centre, Olabimpe values the opportunity to positively influence children's futures and inspire a lifelong love of learning.

“I encourage others to consider this profession because it offers the rare opportunity to make a meaningful difference every day,” says Olabimpe. “It is a career that challenges you to grow, think creatively and lead with compassion. For those who are passionate about supporting children and strengthening families and communities, becoming an RECE is both a rewarding profession and a lasting investment in the future.”

As these educators' experiences show, a career in early learning can take many forms, from educator to consultant, supervisor or centre director. On Child Care Worker and Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day, their stories highlight not only the important role they play in children's lives, but also the opportunities available to those considering a career in the RECE profession.
