Forward Together: Honouring Emancipation Day in Durham Region

Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:

“Today (August 1) marks Emancipation Day—an opportunity to honour the courage and perseverance of those who paved the way for freedom, while celebrating the invaluable contributions of Black communities in Durham Region and beyond.

Advancing equity, challenging anti-Black racism and creating spaces where everyone feels valued, respected and included is a shared responsibility. At the Region, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Division and Durham Region Anti-Racism Taskforce continue to drive meaningful change by bringing together community voices, strengthening partnerships and supporting initiatives that promote equity, inclusion and belonging for all.

On August 5, the Region and community partners will celebrate Emancipation Day at Ed Broadbent Waterfront Park (169 Harbour Road, Oshawa). This family-friendly event, themed ‘Forward Together: Freedom, Culture, Community,’ will feature performances, cultural experiences, local vendors, food and opportunities for learning, reflection and connection.

In recognition of the contributions, leadership and legacy of Black communities, and to reaffirm our commitment to equity and inclusion, the Pan-African flag will fly at Regional Headquarters until August 3.”
