Housing that builds community

Durham is a great place to live, and every day more people are choosing to make it their home. But with that growth, comes real pressure on housing. Many residents are feeling it through rising rents, long waitlists and fewer affordable options.

You might remember us by a longer name—Durham Region Local Housing Corporation—but the new one is simple and intentional. Housing Durham reflects exactly what we do: help people find appropriate, affordable places to live in communities where they feel welcome and supported. That’s where Housing Durham comes in.

Housing Durham is owned and operated by the Region of Durham. As the region’s largest community housing provider, Housing Durham provides affordable rental homes for seniors, families and people with low or moderate incomes. But our focus isn’t just on maintaining buildings—it’s about building stability, connection and opportunity. Because housing is about more than four walls. It’s about belonging.

You can see that commitment taking shape across Durham right now.

In Whitby, we’re replacing an out-of-date building on Centre Street with a modern, accessible seniors building that fits seamlessly into the neighbourhood.

In Oshawa, redevelopments on Christine Crescent and Malaga Road will transform aging housing into welcoming, mixed-use communities with green spaces, shared amenities and more.

And on Townline Road, a new family friendly building—next to a child-care centre—will support residents at all stages of life.

Together, these projects will add hundreds of new homes to our region. They’ll be energy efficient, accessible and designed to last. Just as important, they’ll bring together people of different backgrounds and incomes, strengthening neighbourhoods and creating more vibrant communities.

Housing challenges didn’t appear overnight, and there’s no single solution. But through Housing Durham—and with strong partnerships across our community—we’re making real progress.
