How your fare moves DRT forward and what’s changing July 1
Every time a customer taps their PRESTO card or other forms of fare payment, they contribute to part of a bigger story. One rooted in people, and the role transit plays in daily life. For many residents, DRT is how they get to work, school, appointments and the moments that matter. Every trip sets someone’s day in motion. Every fare helps support the journey.
At its core, every fare is an investment in people—the student heading to class, the worker commuting to a shift, the neighbour staying connected.
It’s how Durham moves forward, together. Fares cover about one-third of daily transit costs, funding safe, reliable service. From clean vehicles and trained operators to maintenance, fuel and customer support. The ability to deliver a positive, connected experience. With real-time updates, digital tools and clear information, it means riders can plan, track and travel with confidence.
Fares also help transit grow alongside a rapidly expanding region: supporting new routes, improved frequency and services. Things like On Demand, and investments. such as the Durham-Scarborough Bus Rapid Transit (DSBRT). Collectively, these projects/developments improve connections within Durham Region and into the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. They support access to jobs, education, services, and tourism. All while helping to build a cleaner, more efficient transit system; including progress toward a zero-emissions fleet.
While costs like fuel, energy and labour continue to rise, year over year, the focus remains on reliable, accessible service that meets the needs of customers—today and into the future. Learn more about fares by watching our recent video.
