Lane restrictions on Rossland Road East (Regional Road 28) in Whitby 2026
Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham advises residents of lane restrictions at the intersection of Thickson Road North (Regional Road 26) and Rossland Road East (Regional Road 28) in the Town of Whitby.
When: August 3, 2026, to June 15, 2027. Construction will be suspended during the winter period from December 1, 2026, to May 1, 2027. Unfavourable weather conditions may affect the schedule.
Where: The intersection of Thickson Road North (Regional Road 26) and Rossland Road East (Regional Road 28).
Why: This work is being undertaken to improve safety, accessibility and traffic flow at the intersection while renewing aging infrastructure. Work includes widening and reconstructing the intersection, adding dedicated right-turn lanes, upgrading traffic signals and streetlighting, installing new pavement markings and signage, and constructing new sidewalks and a multi-use pathway to better accommodate all road users. The project also includes storm sewer improvements, new subdrains, concrete curbs and gutters, and repaving to improve drainage, extend the lifespan of the roadway and reduce future maintenance requirements.
Traffic will be maintained on both Thickson Road and Rossland Road throughout construction, with one left-turn lane and one through lane remaining open in each direction at all times. While access through the intersection will be maintained, lane restrictions may affect traffic flow. Drivers should expect delays and allow extra travel time when travelling through the area.
Note: The Region acknowledges that construction may cause inconvenience and will make every effort to complete the work as quickly and efficiently as possible. Drivers are asked to exercise caution and follow posted signage for the safety of work crews and all road users.
