Local Government Week: Discover the Region behind your community
You may not think about local government in your day-to-day life, but its impact is all around you. Whether you’re turning on the tap, catching a bus, taking your trash out to the curb, joining a public health program or accessing community supports, many of the services that help make life easier and communities stronger are connected to the work of local government.
October 18 to 24 is Local Government Week, a chance to take notice of the people, services and planning that help keep our community healthy, safe and connected. It’s also a good time to learn more about how local government works to support the place we call home.
We invite you to explore what connects you to Durham Region. You might discover something new about the services you rely on, the people who help deliver them and the many ways Regional programs support our growing community.

Explore what connects you to Durham Region
Have you ever wondered who is responsible for the services that support our community or how different levels of government work together? Understanding who does what can help make sense of the programs, infrastructure and investments that shape our daily lives.
To help residents better understand these connections, we've launched Your Region, a new interactive video series that explores how local government works. Through engaging stories and videos, you’ll explore the Region’s role in delivering services, decision-making and the many ways Regional programs and services support residents.
Yanming Zhong, a Works Technician with Durham Region, completed the modules and shared, “I've worked at the Region for 15 years and was surprised by how much I learned from these videos. They helped me better understand the services we provide and the work that happens behind the scenes. I recommend them to anyone interested in learning how the Region works and serves the community."
