New protected left-turn signals in Clarington and Oshawa
Whitby, Ontario – In support of Durham Vision Zero, The Regional Municipality of Durham is installing new protected left-turn signals at two intersections in the City of Oshawa and Municipality of Clarington.
Protected left-turn signals use a dedicated green arrow to allow drivers to turn left only when oncoming traffic is stopped. By reducing the risk of collisions between left-turning and oncoming vehicles, these signals help improve safety at intersections.
Where: The westbound and eastbound left-turn lanes at the intersection of Taunton Road East and Harmony Road North in Oshawa, and at the intersection of Durham Regional Highway 2 and Courtice Road in Clarington.
When: These new signals will be installed at the end of October.
Why: To improve safety for motorists, the fully-protected left-turn signals will allow motorists to safely make left-hand turns from Taunton Road East onto Harmony Road North, and left-hand turns from Durham Regional Highway 2 onto Courtice Road.
New traffic signal indications are implemented specifically for these movements to ensure motorists only turn left when the green left-turn arrow is visible.
Note: This initiative is in support of Durham Vision Zero, a long-term plan to ensure a safer transportation system that sees no lives lost or serious injuries on Durham’s roadways. Learn more at durham.ca/VisionZero.
