Permanent Beaver River Bridge construction set to begin

Whitby, Ontario – Construction on the new permanent Beaver River Bridge east of Beaverton will soon be underway. The Regional Municipality of Durham, with funding provided by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, has begun work to replace the temporary structure currently in place with a permanent structure.

The bridge connects Regional Road 15 over the Beaver River in the Township of Brock. To limit the impact on the community, the new bridge will be constructed in stages while maintaining traffic in both directions for the majority of the time.

The Beaver River Bridge supports residents and the local economy by providing access to Beaverton’s downtown area, local businesses and emergency services. The permanent bridge is anticipated to be complete in 2027. Funding for both the temporary and permanent structures is being provided by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation.

Quick facts:

• There was an emergency closure of the Beaver River Bridge for safety reasons on November 16, 2023.
• On November 14, 2024, a temporary modular bridge system was installed to accelerate restoring this important transportation link.
• Lane shifts will be required until the permanent bridge is completed. For the safety of the construction crews and the community, the current 40 km/h posted speed limit will remain in place during construction through the bridge site and to the east of the Highway 12 intersection. Drivers are asked to exercise caution and comply with the posted speed limit. The speed limit will return to 60 km/h once the permanent bridge project has been completed.
