As families across our community prepare for a new school year, it's a great time to think about how children get to and from school.
Walking, cycling, and other forms of active transportation help children build healthy habits and achieve the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity. Regular physical activity supports healthy growth and development and is linked to improved memory, concentration, behaviour, resilience and academic success.
Parents and caregivers play an important role by helping children learn safe travel habits. Practicing routes, discussing road safety and encouraging active transportation when appropriate can help children build confidence, independence and lifelong healthy behaviours.
While we encourage active transportation, it's also important to recognize emerging safety concerns. Injuries related to e-scooters and bikes are increasing across Canada. One of the best ways to reduce the risk of serious injury is to wear a properly fitted helmet on every ride. Riders should also follow local bylaws, use approved routes, stay alert and understand age restrictions. Safety experts, including Parachute Canada, advise that children under 16 should not ride e-scooters.
As we head back to school, let's work together to create a community where children can stay active, travel safely, and arrive at school ready to learn.
Have a safe and healthy school year.
