Take action against hunger in Durham Region

Food insecurity is impacting more households across Durham Region than ever before. Since 2020, food bank visits have increased by nearly 250 per cent, highlighting the growing need for community support.

"Every day, we see more people needing help to put food on the table," says Ben Earle, CEO of Feed the Need in Durham. "Food insecurity affects one in four residents across our community."

Rising costs are driving demand

As grocery prices, housing and rental costs, and other everyday expenses continue to rise, more individuals and families are turning to food support programs. Now through October 5, the Region of Durham and local municipalities have partnered with Feed the Need in Durham to help raise awareness, encourage donations, and support residents facing food insecurity.

"As a community, we all have a role to play in supporting our neighbours facing difficult circumstances," says John Henry, Regional Chair and CEO, Region of Durham. "Hunger Action Month is an opportunity to raise awareness, give what we can, and help ensure residents have access to the food and support they need."

Community support makes a difference

Through a network of 70 community food programs, Feed the Need in Durham distributes more than 2.4 million pounds of food each year. In the past year alone, those programs supported nearly 900,000 visits, including almost 10,000 people turning to a food bank for the first time.

"Meeting the growing need across Durham Region requires the support and commitment of the entire community," says Earle.
