Waste collection changes for Canada Day 2026

Whitby, Ontario – Residents are reminded that their normal waste collection day will be shifted to the next day the week of July 1 due to the Canada Day holiday. 

Where: The Region is responsible for curbside waste collection in Ajax, Brock, Clarington, Pickering, Scugog and Uxbridge. Garbage and green bin collection services for Oshawa and Whitby residents are provided by their respective municipalities. Ontario's recycling program is managed by Circular Materials. Visit Circular Materials for more information. 

When: Waste collection scheduled for Wednesday, July 1 will be moved to the following day. This shift will continue through the rest of the week, ending with Friday, July 3 collection being moved to Saturday, July 4.  

Why: The waste collection changes are due to the Canada Day holiday on July 1. 

Note: Residents are encouraged to download the Durham Region Waste App or access the online collection calendar atdurham.ca/Waste

Regional Waste Management Facilities  

The Region’s Waste Management Facilities in Brock, Scugog and Oshawa, and the Household Special Waste Depot in Clarington will be closed Wednesday, July 1. Regular operating hours will resume Thursday, July 2. 

Regional Waste Management Centre 

The Region's Waste Management Centre located at 4600 Garrard Road in Whitby, will be closed until Monday, August 31 as construction is completed on site.  Residents are encouraged to purchase new Green Bins, kitchen containers, backyard composters and bag tags or exchange green bin and kitchen containers online with free home delivery. To take advantage of this service, visit durham.ca/NewBins or call 311 (in Durham Region) or toll-free at 1-800-372-1102.
