Leaving the city wasn’t just a change of scenery—it was an invitation into a vibrant close-knit community with unexpected opportunity. In this “Letter To My Former Self,” Michael Cascone looks back on taking the leap to north Durham and how that decision created space for a more present family life, renewed career purpose, and a quiet sense of belonging that reshaped what success looked like.
Dear Mike,
You’re probably reading this from your downtown office, somewhere between your afternoon coffee run and your next meeting.
Life has changed a lot since then.
We’ve become a part of the fabric of a small town in north Durham called Port Perry, and contrary to what some might think, it’s ignited a drive in us to shape the future, not just settle into the present.
If we’ve learned anything, it’s that ambition, relevance, and passion doesn’t thin out once you get north of the 401—and it certainly doesn’t die north of the 407.
There is a perspective change when you move, so be prepared. Living by the lake recalibrates your days: mornings begin with sun over the water instead of a sweaty streetcar.
Stop worrying about career impacts, commuting, meetings, and logistics. It all works here. You’re not moving slower or stepping back; you’re more focused, more structured and more intentional in the way you show up.
This is community in the truest sense—you’ve always sought it but have never been able to articulate what it means. You’ll learn.
Weekends of live music, impromptu twilight golf, and snowmobiling. Neighbours who don’t put their head down, but always show up—to shovel, to check in, to celebrate. These aren’t just empty Canadianisms; actions speak here, and presence is a pillar.
And when your family arrives, they see what you’ve found: a place where “work-life balance” means the opportunity to grow professionally and be present for the moments that matter most.
You still go to Toronto—often. The city regains its appeal when it's on your terms and above the grind.
You’re not leaving opportunity behind. You just stopped assuming it only lived downtown.
Sincerely,
Future You
