Assessing the Impact of Vector-Borne Diseases in Durham Region

To better understand, prepare for, and respond to climate-related health challenges, the Durham Region Health Department has released Assessing the Impact of Vector-Borne Disease (VBD), part of the Climate Change and Health in Durham Region series. This comprehensive vulnerability assessment examines both the current and future health impacts of VBD in the region.
As our climate warms, diseases carried by ticks and mosquitoes, such as Lyme disease and West Nile virus, are spreading more quickly across Durham Region. These infections can range from mild to severe, with greater risks to older adults, young children, Indigenous Peoples, and individuals with chronic health conditions.
The report shows a sharp increase in Lyme disease cases and a growing number of West Nile virus infections; trends that are expected to continue as temperatures rise. The report also finds that many residents are not taking simple precautions to protect themselves from ticks and mosquitoes and explores strategies to address this gap in awareness and prevention.
