Honouring Indigenous cultures, traditions and leadership on Indigenous Peoples Day
Whitby, Ontario – The following statement is being issued on behalf of John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham:
“Today (June 21), known as the day of longest light, is the summer solstice. This day has long held deep meaning as a time of renewal, and connection with the land and each other. It’s also National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada—a time when we recognize and celebrate First Nations, Inuit and Métis histories, cultures and communities.
As Regional Chair, I am grateful to live and serve on lands that have been cared for by Indigenous Peoples for generations. Their stewardship, knowledge and deep connection to the land and water continue to guide and inspire how we think about community, responsibility and the future we are building together.
Today is a time to celebrate and also to reflect. I extend my appreciation to Indigenous Peoples for sharing their knowledge, stories and traditions and for creating space for us to listen, learn and grow.
Building strong relationships takes ongoing effort, openness and understanding. By continuing to make space for Indigenous voices, perspectives and leadership, we’re building connected communities for generations to come."
