Major Investments in Durham Region
In October 2025, the Government of Canada and Province of Ontario announced a historic$3 billion investment in Canada’s first Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) at the Darlington Nuclear Station in Clarington. Construction is already underway on the first of four SMRs, with Ontario investing $1 billion through the Building Ontario Fund and the federal government contributing $2 billion via the Canada Growth Fund. Built in Clarington and powered by Canadian-made materials, this investment solidifies Durham Region as a leader in nuclear innovation.
GE Vernova Hitachi
In June 2025, the Province of Ontario announced an investment of $70 million from GE Vernova Hitachi to build the world’s first BWRX-300 SMR Engineering and Service Centre in Durham Region. This exciting announcement supports the long-term operation of SMRs in the region, creates more than 300 local jobs, and expands the highly skilled energy workforce in Durham.
Laurentis Energy Partners
In June 2025, Laurentis Energy Partners announced the opening of its new head office in Oshawa. Laurentis is a leader in innovative nuclear solutions and the global supply of life-saving medical isotopes. This new office provides a refreshed and expanded workspace to support Laurentis's ongoing growth—increasing their footprint across Ontario, Canada, and internationally.
Black & McDonald
In October 2024, Black & McDonald opened their new, modern and bright workspace in Pickering. As a Tier 1 vendor to Ontario Power Generation, Black & McDonald will support the refurbishment of Pickering Nuclear Generating Station and continue serving the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station. More than 85 staff operate in the new facility, providing multi-trade and engineering services.
AtkinsRéalis
AtkinsRéalis is a world-leading professional services and project management company dedicated to engineering a better future. Headquartered in Montreal, AtkinsRéalis celebrated the opening of its new 18,000 square foot office space in Pickering in February 2024. The new office provides space for 150 engineers and project managers dedicated to supporting nuclear engineering projects.
Global First Power
In October 2023, Global First Power (GFP) opened their office in Whitby. With a team of more than 40 employees, GFP is actively preparing to launch the Kronos Micro Modular Reactor (MMR) project at Chalk River. In August 2025, Nano Nuclear Energy finalized its acquisition of GFP and submitted a Canadian licensing application for the Kronos MMR at Chalk River. This strategic move significantly strengthens Nano Nuclear Energy’s position as a North American leader in nuclear microreactor development with operations anchored in the Durham Region.
Hydrogen Commercialization Hub
Durham Region is advancing the future of hydrogen by partnering with Ontario Tech University’s Brilliant Energy Institute to establish a Hydrogen Commercialization Hub. This initiative draws on Durham’s strengths in clean energy and its dynamic network of technology innovators, industry associations, and industrial producers. The Hub is actively seeking partners and investors to join their ecosystem, collaborate on a comprehensive value chain assessment, and help shape the future of hydrogen innovation in Durham Region.
