Whitby resident shares her Durham Greener Homes journey

As a first-time homeowner, Cindy was pleased that the Durham Greener Homes Program offered access to a free energy coach who could guide the homeowner through the retrofit process, outline what incentive she could be eligible for, and even noted low-interest loans through local credit unions. The energy coach was helpful, knowledgeable, and thorough; guiding Cindy through the decision on which retrofits were needed, the order of implementation, and how to hire contractors. 

Thanks to the Durham Greener Homes Program, Cindy installed a heat pump, which functions as a furnace and an air conditioner, replaced the attic insulation and the windows. The most apparent changes were noticed in the bedroom above the garage, which used to be cold in the wintertime and hot in the summer. After the retrofit, the temperature is more stable being close to the normal temperature within the rest of the house. As for the heat pump, Cindy has only good things to say about it. It is almost silent and does not consume much energy. She rarely turns the thermostat above 20°C in the winter. The insulation and new windows have also contributed, leading to significant savings on her energy bills.
