I'm in a Floodplain, Now What?

Although flooding affects everyone, some residents may be at greater risk for negative impacts. One aspect that can make a person more at risk is their exposure to flood hazards; in other words, whether they are located in a place that is more prone to flooding.

Everyone has a role when it comes to staying safe before, during, and after a flood. Although you cannot completely remove your risk, there are steps you can take to increase your resilience, including:

• Learning about flood messaging and watershed conditions from your local Conservation Authority.
• Having an emergency plan and 72-hour emergency kit for you and your family.
• Speaking with neighbors about the above steps and creating a plan to support each other in an emergency, especially those who may be more vulnerable.
• Learning about ways to make your home more resilient through FloodSmart Canada.
• Asking about flooding when meeting prospective realtors or discussing real estate transactions
• Talking with your insurance broker and learning about flooding and insurance by reviewing the Insurance Bureau of Canada’s website.
