Drivers reminded to leave one metre of space when passing or driving alongside cyclists

Whitby, Ontario – A little space makes a big difference. Durham Region reminds drivers to leave at least one metre of space between their vehicle and bicycles on the road to help improve safety for all road users. Through Durham Vision Zero, we work with road safety partners to create safer roads and reduce collisions, road fatalities and injuries with the goal of zero people killed or injured on Durham roads.

According to the Highway Traffic Act drivers must leave at least one metre of space when passing a bicycle or e-bike travelling in the same direction. If needed, drivers can cross the centre line to pass as long as it’s safe and follows the rules of the road. If it’s not safe, drivers should wait behind the cyclist until they can pass safely.

Cyclists don’t have to leave a one metre gap but must follow all road rules. It’s important for cyclists to stay aware of their surroundings, especially when vehicles are passing, and keep a safe position on the road.
