Whitby, Ontario – Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) and Red Light Cameras (RLC) will soon be in effect on Durham roads. As part of Durham Vision Zero, both initiatives are reminders to slow down and drive safe, and are expected to be implemented by the end of August through to early September—just in time for back to school safety on our roadways.
Although fines are not yet being issued, ASE and RLCs have already been installed on some roadways and have started to collect data.

Health Department reports season’s first positive mosquitoes for West Nile Virus

Whitby, Ontario - Durham Region Health Department has received notification of adult mosquitoes that have tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). The positive batch of mosquitoes was collected from one of the Health Department’s mosquito trap sites located in north Oshawa. Positive confirmation was received on July 28. These are the first mosquitoes in Durham Region to test positive for WNV this season.

Durham reports positive building permit growth for the first half of 2020

Whitby, Ontario – The Regional Municipality of Durham has compared the 2020 development application data (January to June) with data collected for the same period in 2019. The data showcases positive growth in both residential and non-residential building permits, applications and volume when compared to the first half of 2019.

Regional Council recognizes the need for affordable housing to be expedited during COVID-19

Whitby, Ontario – Yesterday, Durham Regional Council approved the Expedited Supportive Housing Report, which identifies the urgent need for affordable and supportive housing. The report outlines two proposed projects—the development of a modular supportive housing project in Beaverton and a new micro-homes pilot project in Oshawa.
By expediting the development of these projects, the Region helps to address the needs of Durham’s unsheltered residents, which were highlighted during the COVID-19 crisis.
