Durham Regional Council holds first meeting for the 2018 to 2022 term
Whitby, Ontario – Today, The Regional Municipality of Durham held its first council meeting, where all 29 elected representatives were officially sworn in for the 2018 to 2022 term of Regional Council.
Regional Chair
John Henry was sworn in as Regional Chair, an individual who represents approximately 685,500 residents who live in Durham Region. Henry is the head of Durham Regional Council and Chief Executive Officer of the corporation; presides over all meetings of Regional Council; is a member of all standing committees; promotes and advances the Regional position on a wide variety of matters; represents Durham Region on various boards, committees and organizations; and undertakes other significant duties.
Members of Council
In 2016, Durham Regional Council made the decision to change its composition, which included modifying the number of elected officials from some area municipalities. This decision did not change the total number of elected officials who make up council as a whole.
In addition to the Regional Chair, there are 28 members of Durham Regional Council who are elected within the eight area municipalities. This includes each mayor, who automatically becomes a Regional Councillor. Regional Council is composed of:
- Four members from the Town of Ajax.
- Two members from the Township of Brock.
- Three members from the Municipality of Clarington.
- Six members from the City of Oshawa.
- Four members from the City of Pickering.
- Two members from the Township of Scugog.
- Two members from the Township of Uxbridge.
- Five members from the Town of Whitby.
- The Regional Chair.
