Regional Council approves 2019 water and sewer user-rate supported budgets
Whitby, Ontario – Durham Regional Council has approved the 2019 water supply and sanitary sewerage business plans and budgets. These budgets are funded by user rates—not property taxes—and support the maintenance and operations of the Region’s water and sewer systems.
“Investing in our municipal water system is one of the important investments we can make—no other service has greater impact on our everyday life than safe drinking water and the protection of our environment.” said John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer. “I am pleased with how staff have balanced the ongoing need for upgrades and improvements to our aging municipal water system with fiscal and environmental responsibilities.”
In addition to ongoing maintenance and operation of the water and sanitary sewer system, Durham Region has several planned major projects for 2019:
- The construction of a new feedermain on Rossland Road in Ajax.
- Sanitary sewer and watermain replacement on Centre Street in Whitby.
- Feedermain and sanitary sewer replacement on Bloor Street in Oshawa.
- Courtice trunk sanitary sewer and feedermain on Baseline and Trulls roads in Courtice (Clarington).
- The construction of a new water supply plant and sanitary sewage pumping station in Newcastle, to support growth in east Clarington.
In December, Durham Regional Council approved the 2019 water and sanitary sewer user rates, with a combined increase of 1.8 per cent, or $17.28 per year for the average Durham Region household. Continued investment in an aging municipal water and sewer system is required to protect this important resource, and to meet obligations under the Safe Drinking Water Act.
