Walking for Truth and Reconciliation

The bright orange shirts stood out against the clear blue sky—a striking reminder of the day’s purpose at Durham Regional Headquarters in Whitby, as more than 200 people, including community members, Regional employees, representatives from the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS), students and their teachers, came together to recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation at the Region’s annual Truth and Reconciliation Awareness Walk.
With the scent and smoke of sacred Indigenous medicines drifting across the breeze, the event began with a smudge followed by drumming and songs, allowing participants to set their intentions for the walk ahead. The story of Phyliss Webstad was also shared, explaining the significance of wearing orange on September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Addressing the crowd, Regional Chair, John Henry, Senator Cecil Wagar, Métis Nation of Ontario Senator and Helen Giachetta, President of the Oshawa Métis Council, spoke about the importance of honouring the children who never returned home, the survivors of residential schools, their families and the communities who are still impacted by these tragedies. They emphasized that reconciliation as an ongoing and collective commitment.
With drums and voices ringing out, the Travelling Song was performed in Anishinaabemowin, sending the crowd on their way to Fallingbrook Park, supported by waves and honking horns from those passing by.
Once by the babbling water of a creek that flows through the park, the group paused to reflect about how each of us can support Indigenous healing and how, as a community, we can honour the heritage, culture and achievements of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.
Miigwetch (which means thank you in Anishinaabemowin) to all who attended. Let us continue this journey together by honouring the past and committing to a future based on respect, healing and collaboration.
