A large sign for "The Regional Municipality of Durham Headquarters" stands on a grassy area in front of a modern office building. The sign displays the address 605 Rossland Road East. Surrounding the area are blooming trees and several flags.

Types of signs

Regulatory road signs

Regulatory signs are signs that tell you what you can or cannot do. These signs tell you traffic regulations. These regulations can apply all the time or at specific times.

Examples include:

  • Stop signs
  • Speed limit signs
  • One-way traffic signs
  • Turn prohibitions
  • Parking regulation signs

These signs typically have a white background with a black message. Exceptions are stop signs and yield signs. They have red and white colours. They have the unique octagon or triangle shapes.

Warning road signs

Warning signs warn you of conditions that could be hazardous. Examples include:

  • Curve and intersection warnings
  • Stop signs
  • Traffic signals ahead notice
  • Playground or school area warning signs

These signs typically have a yellow diamond or rectangular shape with a black message.

Sign explaining which way to go

Directional guide signs provide information about street names, route numbers, highway exits and directions to nearby communities or services. These signs are generally rectangular with a white message or a green background.

Construction road signs

Temporary condition signs and devices, such as cones and barrels, can indicate:

  • Construction
  • Maintenance
  • Utility work

Many of the messages and symbols are the same as warning signs, but with an orange background colour. This is to highlight these unusual conditions.

Tourism directional road signs

Tourism directional signs inform the public of certain services or facilities that travellers may need or be interested. These include:

  • Services
  • Recreational facilities
  • Tourist attractions
  • Scenic points of interest
