How to apply

Here are some frequently asked questions about the application process.

Can I submit a cover letter?
Yes. Your cover letter must be in the same document as your resume. Our system will only let you upload one attachment. Your cover letter should be the first page of the document, and your resume should follow. Once you upload the document, you won't be able to edit it.
How do I know that my application has been received? Can I track the status of my application?
Once your application has been successfully submitted, you will receive a confirmation email. You can view your status under the 'My Activities' page on our recruitment portal. The status shows as 'Submitted' once your application has been uploaded or copied successfully. Due to the volume of applications we receive, only candidates selected to participate in the competition process will be contacted directly.
How can I find out about new employment opportunities?
The 'Job Search' section of our recruitment portal allows you to enter keywords or search criteria for jobs that interest you. You can save your criteria with the 'Save Search' button. When you save it, select the 'Notify me when new jobs meet my criteria' checkbox and enter your email address. The system searches our active job postings daily, and will send you an email with any new postings that meet your criteria.
How can I change my password or update my contact information?
Your password and contact information can be updated on our recruitment portal's 'My Account Information' page.
How do I deactivate my account?
You cannot deactivate your account. The system will automatically deactivate your account if it has not been actively used within 12 months.
Why is my user name and password (account) no longer recognized in the system?
If you have not signed in to our recruitment portal in the last year, your profile may have been removed. You will not receive an email notification about the removal. In order to apply to any future job postings, you will have to create a new account.
Who do I contact if I'm having problems with the recruitment portal?
Please email RecruitingHelp@durham.ca. We try to answer emails within 24 hours during our regular business hours from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
How do I view internal job postings?
Internal job postings are only available to our current employees. To view internal job postings, you will need to submit your user name and employee ID number. You will have the ability to submit a resume or application for any internal postings by clicking apply within the posting.
Where can I get a Police Record Check, if required?
You may need to get a Police Record Check or Vulnerable Sector Check as a condition of employment (it will be noted on the job posting). Police Record Checks older than 60 days will not be accepted. The candidate is responsible for any cost. If you live in Durham Region, you can get a Police Record Check by visiting drps.ca. Public access to The Regional Municipality of Durham Headquarters at 605 Rossland Road East (Level 3) in Whitby is restricted. If you live outside Durham Region, contact your local police service.
What does working in a unionized environment mean to me?
The Region of Durham is a unionized environment, and has a number of different bargaining units and collective agreements. Anyone hired into a unionized job is required to join the union and remit dues on a monthly basis directly from their pay. A copy of a collective agreement is provided to each employee, so they know the details of employment, which includes:
  • Salary information
  • Working conditions
  • Benefits
  • Process for filling jobs
  • Settling disputes (grievance process)
Can I use the browser's navigation buttons?
Please don't use your browser's navigation buttons while you are in the recruiting site as it might produce unwanted results. Instead, use the navigation options available within the application.
