Infant & Child Development Program

About the program

Durham Region’s Infant & Child Development (ICD) Program is a free home visiting program available to families who have concerns about their child’s development.

Our program provides family coaching, resources, and strategies designed to support children between the ages of birth to school entry.

Our services

  • Support your child’s development through informal and formal assessments.
  • Provide adult coaching and modelling.
  • Provide activity ideas to support your family's daily routine.
  • Assist with accessing resources and community services.
  • Occupational therapy consultation.

The Infant & Child Development Program is committed to supporting the growth, development, and well-being of children and their families. We believe in the benefits of early intervention, family-centered services, and inclusive practices that respect the uniqueness of every child and family.

Our values:

  • Cultural safety and respect: Interventions are inclusive, culturally responsive, and affirm the identity and traditions of the family.
  • Family-centered service: Families are recognized as essential partners and experts in supporting their child’s growth and development.
  • Strength-based practice: Service is focused on the strengths, abilities, and resilience of the child, family, and their community.

Family Icon

At Infant & Child Development, service is driven by the family service plan (FSP) that we create together. This FSP lists the priorities you have for your child’s development and includes strategies that work within your family’s routine. The FSP priorities may change throughout service.

Areas of focus may include helping your child:

  • Care for themselves (e.g., dressing, eating).
  • Communicate with others.
  • Move their body (fine and gross motor movements).
  • Play and socialize.
  • Regulate emotions.

Your feedback is important to us because it helps make the ICD program relevant and helpful for families. Do you want to share your experience?

You can:

  • There is no cost involved. This is a free and voluntary program. You can make a request to end service at any time.
  • Visits are scheduled frequently and may take place in your home. This is your time to ask questions, share updates about your family’s service needs, and try new strategies with your consultant.
