Hospitalizations in Durham Region Residents, 2017

Highlights

  • Durham Region residents recorded more than 41,000 hospitalizations in 2017. This represents a rate of around 6,000 hospitalizations per 100,000 population.
  • The rate of hospitalization in Durham Region residents did not change between 2008 to 2017.
  • Pregnancy-related conditions were the most common cause of hospitalization in 2017. In total, 16 per cent of hospitalizations recorded in 2017 were pregnancy-related.
  • Durham Region females were more likely than males to be hospitalized in 2017, because of the impact of pregnancy.
  • In 2017, hospitalizations occurred most often in these age groups:
    • Infants less than one year
    • Women of child-bearing age – between 20 and 44
    • Seniors – specifically, adults over 75

Definitions

Hospitalization

A discharge from hospital because of death, transfer to another facility, or release to go home.

Age-standardized rate per 100,000

An age-standardized rate is the number of hospital discharges per 100,000 that would occur if the population had the same age distribution as the 2011 Canadian population. This rate provides a single summary number that allows populations with different age compositions to be compared.

Age-specific rate per 100,000

This rate is the total number of hospital discharges in a specified age group per 100,000 population in that age group. The numerator and denominator refer to the same age group.
