Data Notes

Hospitalization data are collected by the Canadian Institute for Health Information on a fiscal year basis.

A person may have more than one diagnostic code for each hospitalization. In these cases, the diagnostic code determined by a doctor to be the most responsible diagnosis for the hospitalization was taken as the cause. Hospitalizations were selected using ICD-10-CA diagnosis codes. The most common causes presented in this repot were adapted from the International Shortlist for Hospital Morbidity Tabulation (ISHMT). See the table below for the connection between causes of hospitalization and ICD-10-CA diagnosis codes.

Data were analyzed by the residence of the patient, not where the hospitalization occurred or where the person was subsequently transferred. Durham Region residents treated outside of the province were excluded; however, less than 0.5 per cent of all hospitalizations for Ontario residents occurs out-of-province. Hospitalizations were reported by calendar year, based on the discharge date of the initial stay or readmission.

Definitions

Hospitalization

A discharge from hospital because of death, transfer to another facility, or release to go home.

Age-standardized rate per 100,000

An age-standardized rate is the number of hospital discharges per 100,000 that would occur if the population had the same age distribution as the 2011 Canadian population. This rate provides a single summary number that allows populations with different age compositions to be compared.

Age-specific rate per 100,000

This rate is the total number of hospital discharges in a specified age group per 100,000 population in that age group. The numerator and denominator refer to the same age group.
