Durham Region's Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC) continues to chart the path forward to create an accessible region for all. The AAC advises Council on accessibility issues, and the preparation and review of accessibility reports, plans and initiatives.

Durham Region's 2022-2025 Multi-Year Accessibility Plan celebrates the accomplishments of the last few years and outlines ongoing efforts to improve accessibility of our services, programs and facilities. Learn more by reading the Multi-Year Accessibility Plan and Accessibility Reports below.

In June 2005, the Ontario Government passed the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), with a vision of a fully accessible Ontario by 2025. Businesses and organizations in Ontario must follow the standards set out in the AODA . AODA has developed accessibility standards in five areas:

  1. Customer service (Accessible Customer Service brochure)
  2. Information and communication
  3. Employment
  4. Transportation
  5. Design of public spaces (built environment)

On June 20, 2018, the Government of Canada introduced Bill C-81, An Act to ensure a barrier-free Canada (the Accessible Canada Act) in Parliament. The Accessible Canada Act came into force on July 11, 2019. The purpose of this Act is to make Canada barrier-free by January 1, 2040.

The Regional Municipality of Durham Accessibility Policy identifies how the Region achieves and maintains accessibility by meeting the requirements of the AODA and the Integrated Accessibility Standards, Ontario Regulation 191/11.

Under the AODA, information posted to public-facing websites must be in an accessible format. The Region of Durham is continuously working towards meeting the Web Content Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 Level AA.
