The Region of Durham hosts many community special waste events that take place all year.

Reuse Days
|
Drop off reusable items free of charge at our Reuse Day events. Items will go to Habitat for Humanity Restores, the Diabetes Canada and Salvation Army Thrift Store.
Acceptable materials
We will accept:
- Wall art and framed mirrors
- Lumber (clean, no nails and more than four feet in length)
- Roofing materials (new only)
- Windows and doors (no slab or hollow core doors)
- Tools and hardware
- Lighting fixtures
- Metal or wooden furniture
- Carpets (area rugs in like-new condition, no carpet remnants)
- Counters and sinks
- Plumbing supplies and fixtures
- Flooring (at least 3 boxes of packaged materials)
- Clothing and textiles
- Books and magazines
- CDs, DVDs, video games, records
- Toys and games
- Sporting equipment
- Window coverings (no vertical or horizontal blinds)
- Housewares and accessories
- Gardening equipment
- Working appliances
- Footwear and jackets
We do not accept:
- Garbage
- Household hazardous waste
- Electronics
- Soft sided furniture
- Cribs, high chairs, strollers and all other baby equipment
Charities have the right to refuse materials. Unaccepted materials are your responsibility. You can bring unaccepted materials to a waste management facility. Fees will apply.

Compost giveaway events

Every spring we host compost giveaway events. All residents of Durham Region are invited. Each household can get up to four blue box-sized containers full of compost.
What should I bring?
- Shovels: residents are responsible for shovelling their own compost.
- Containers: blue boxes, reusable containers, yard waste bags.

Electronic waste collection events
|
We invite you to drop off your unwanted electronics for free recycling.
It is your responsibility to remove all personal data from your electronics.

Household hazardous waste collection events (HHW)
|
We invite you to drop off your household hazardous waste (HHW) for free at special collection events.
Tips for attending a HHW event
- Pack HHW in sturdy cardboard boxes so that it does not spill during transport.
- Put like chemicals together.
- Separate different chemicals.
- Do not mix products together.
- Label materials that are not in their original containers.
- Make sure containers are not leaking and lids are tightly sealed.
- Place boxes in your car trunk, on a plastic sheet.
- Place it away from passengers.
- At the event, staff will ask you to remain in your car while they remove the HHW from your trunk.
